Wise Old [Dungeoneering] Tips

Post by Tamal » Thu Oct 07, 2010 4:05 pm

From the latest Postbag from the Hedge:
  • Gatestones
  • Drop a gatestone at key doors, so you can return to them when you have the correct key. Note down the colour and shape of the key door where you left the gatestone if you have trouble remembering.
  • It's possible to teleport an entire party to your location using the personal and group gatestones. Create a gatestone and then drop it at your location. Cast Group Gatestone Teleport from your spellbook, take the group gatestone from the party leader, teleport back to your personal gatestone location and then tell your party to do cast their own Group Gatestone Teleport spell.
  • Advanced dungeoneers will often split into different groups, each following their own path through the dungeons. Once a dungeoneer reaches a guardian door or a challenge room that requires multiple players, they will inform the rest of their party, who will teleport to their location using the methods in the bulletpoint above. Having overcome the obstacle, each dungeoneer will return to their previous location and continue on.

    Combat
  • Get everyone to attack the same NPC. You'll find that marking a target and then attacking them as a group will speed up your raid.
  • Shades are a regular nuisance in the dungeons. Switch to slash, protect from ranged, and attack them first when you enter a room.
  • It's possible to use food and potions on another player simply by 'using' it on them. This saves you trading or drop-trading the item - particularly important when one of your party is 'tanking' against a boss.
  • Share food! By wasting food or hogging it, you can make the dungeon incredibly difficult for other players, and you will often cost them Dungeoneering XP at the end of the dungeon if they die. This will make your party less likely to raid with you in the future.
  • Get an idea of which creatures cause you the biggest threat in combat. You'll soon start to build up a kill order for when you enter a room: for example, many melee raiders will attack poison spiders first, then shades, then mages, warriors and often leave bats behind, as they take a long time to defeat.
  • Make sure you have one person who can cast Cure Poison. Particularly in the abandoned sections of Daemonheim, you will find that you get poisoned regularly.

    Boss and Challenge Rooms
  • Having trouble against Stomp? Place a gatestone next to a lodestone and get another party member to do the same. Even if the rockfalls block your path, you'll have time to teleport to the gatestones and place your crystals.
  • Don't let the guardian sphere challenge room get you down. If you are having trouble getting past the sphere, place a gatestone on one of the pillars on either side of the puzzle. You can then teleport there if the sphere is about to get you, giving you a clearer path to the end platform. You can also use this tactic to teleport away from the puzzle once you have picked up the crystal.
  • The monolith is not effected by the magic levels of the player who activates it. The shades will be equally difficult, no matter who activates it!
  • During the monolith challenge room, attack each shade once as it appears. This way, they will focus on you rather than casting at the monolith. If you are in a group with all of the shades focused on you rather than the monolith, you should mark and kill each one systematically.
  • Several challenge rooms are easier to complete when only one player does them. The sliding puzzles, light convergence puzzle and ferret pressure pads are good examples of rooms that get more confusing when multiple people attempt them.

    General
  • Using the 'Leave Party' option on your ring of kinship is a faster means of leaving a dungeon than clicking on the exit ladder.
  • Are you a skiller? The shadow silk hood allows you to wander about a dungeon unnoticed by non-magical humanoids, giving you the ideal opportunity to clear the room of resources unhindered! It may even be worth binding the hood if it suits your particular play style.
  • If you put a heim crab up to your ear you can hear the sea.
  • Chests are great for cash. Thieve from any chests you see and you will invariably get items that are worth several thousand gp to the smuggler in the starting room.
  • Don't be too concerned about the performance of your team-mates. Their death tallies will not affect the amount of XP you get at the end of a dungeon. Still, helping each other out makes for a better game for everyone, and you're more likely to find regular and reliable raiding parties this way.
  • It's well worth spending the last few moments of a dungeon to explore all of the locked and unopened rooms. Particularly with a high prestige, you will notice a great deal of difference in your XP totals.
  • Do not be tempted to prestige before you have completed every floor on your prestige run! The total XP you miss out on on your next prestige run could be in the tens of thousands. It may also be worth activating any new surface dungeons and trading in your tokens for Dungeoneering XP before you prestige, so that you can unlock as many new floors as possible.
  • Consider binding cosmic runes or law runes so that you can cast teleports within Daemonheim, speeding up your raid.
