so why exactly does jagex want unlimited access to my computer including web cams, mic etc? I am not sure if i like that

you should still get an alert when it trys to access them most laptops have a light near the lens when it is active.

I wouldnt be suprised if its the latest idea for catching Botter/cheats. Im not great with programming and things like that, but it kind of makes sense that if they have access to what your computer is doing, your less likely to use a bot programme. Although it could just be Jagex being nosy or trying to make us paranoid

They've actually been doing this for a bit with other things. For example: when you submit a bug report they require a scan of your computer.

This is the official communication I have just received.
The certificate permissions are the same as they have always been. Unlike with Facebook or Android apps, the message Java shows you does not reflect the actual permissions used by RuneScape; it is a standard message that is the same for any and all applications that use certain features of Java, no matter which ones they access or not. We don't use microphones or webcams at all, and we don't read your personal files.
In the case of RuneScape, we use access to your local hard drive to save the game cache so that you don't need to download every bit of game art, every 3D model, every sound effect every single time you play. We also need low-level hardware access in order to access 3D graphics cards for OpenGL/DirectX graphics and your computer's processor for better performance in Software mode.
The reason you need to re-confirm this is that the certificates used to "sign" (confirm the authenticity of) Java apps expire after a few years and need to be renewed, which involves setting up a new certificate. This is what we have done with this update. The actual permissions used by RuneScape have not changed from before the update, and we have been using these features for years.
