If you haven't heard yet, Jagex is now selling Squeal of Fortune spins, which is to say, they are selling gold. A riot is going on right now in w66. As you can see, this did not go over well with the locals:



And of course the official forums are lighting up under "Recent Game Updates" Here is one post I found particulary interesting. The guy spent $20 to get 75 spins:

So for $20, he got about 25 lamps, for a total of approximately 200k to 250k exp, and around 120k in gold. A complete rip off, but purchased "legally" for real-world-monies nonetheless.

Oh my! I just saw this... I was hoping it was a April Fool's Joke. I know of another online game that has this mechanic built into it, but the game itself is free. When I first saw the Squeal of Fortune, I thought this looks too much like that other game and feared that Jagex was going to do this. I mentioned that to a few other people, but they seemed to think that Jagex wouldn't move to this micro-transaction model.

I am disappointed that Jagex decided to do this.

It was obvious as soon as this was released that this was the idea behind it, it's a device used in heaps of different mmo's.

I think the only way Jagex will listen is if we all cancel membership!

This is...absurd.

I've put up with a lot of their questionable business decisions in the past here, but this may be the straw that breaks the camel's back for me. No this update probably won't affect me directly, or influence anything I ever do in Runescape. But it breaches a moral dilemma on company practices that I certainly do not support and I do feel a bit of hypocrisy in continuing any support for Jagex.

If the squeal was strictly cosmetic, I would have no issue with this. Hell, even if was strictly experience lamps I could look the other way. But the fact is, the wheel sells power in the form of high tier armor and weapons and gold through alching, and that elusive 10m prize.

We'll see I guess.

It's a game, they're a company they'll run the game to be the best revenue generator they can.

If I enjoy the game I'll play it, if I dont I wont, I've never really got the whole riots thing.

I take the Spins becoming buyable as a bad sign. If they go as far as creating purchasable member items than hell with this game there are better stuff out there to play.

This is a much better idea. Still ensures them more money without making the spins "buyable" per say.
