Let's talk about our community

Post by Tamal » Fri Aug 17, 2012 1:44 pm

Please note that I'm coming from a personal standpoint, I'm not actively involved in Admin anymore, I just still belong to the Admin group while we figure out some website stuff.

This is not directed at any particular person, but an amalgamation of many complaints/comments I have seen over the years.

We all are responsible for our community. To put forth an analogy…

KoA is like a community park. There are all sorts of people in the park. We don't want a police park where every move is overly scrutinized so in general if someone would like to come into our park we welcome them. Occasionally a person in the park throws some rubbish on the ground, making the park less nice. Bystanders could:
  1. Ask the person to please pick up the trash and not do it again/pick up the trash themselves
  2. Ignore the trash on the ground and now the park is messier
  3. Run off and complain to a park employee that the park is going downhill and "this park isn't what it used to be"
If you want KoA to be a friendlier/nicer/skillier/whatever place, make it happen.

I reflect back on the time when many people complained about how skill week repeated the same skills. I drove change with a campaign to vote for Constitution. It won and we had a different skill week.

"Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact, and that is, everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you ... the minute that you understand that you can poke life ... that you can change it, you can mould it ... that's maybe the most important thing." — Steve Jobs

Admin is not a judge of character and should not curate personalities. It's a community responsibility to be tolerant and to keep the park clean.

Too bad there isn't a "like" button on KoA forums, I totally agree with everything you said there. (@Tamal)

I agree whole heartedly with the sentiment but its so hard when day in day out you feel like you are talking to yourself...I am not saying I am perfect but I do try to say hello to all when they log in and say good day..to answer a question if I can or say I dont know...yet its the same few that extend the same courtesy to me - it gets to the point where I think why do I bother? I know that sometimes some people are busy with stuff and may miss chat but surely not almost all the people all the time? Does it really take that much effort to just Hi etc?
