Yes, set the portals, check the door if needed, THEN use Jarrod. Be sure your compass is facing the right way, because the door is actually facing south. That confused me at first.

That I have no idea. I didn't die when I was doing the quest. I would imagine it's in a spot close to the boss.

You'll want to use magic because you will be moving around a lot. I used a Chaotic Staff with Virtus top and bottom. Whatever spell you want to use is fine. I had no issue with ancients.

I can agree with you that it's basically one o those kinda of quests. I can say that for the final boss well.. As for the elf city, there's plenty to do there. It's well worth unlocking.
